Since 2013, we havebeen running a three-day Summer School in English Corpus Linguistics. This is an intensive introduction to the basics of corpus linguistics research in English, covering key issues in corpus linguistics methodology, the use of corpora for syntactic and semantic research, basic elements of statistics, and how to use large and small corpora, in particular ICE-GB and DCPSE. The sessions are highly interactive and hands-on; each day ends with a practical session where students put into practice what they have learnt.
Participants come from a wide range of countries and backgrounds and getting to know each other and learn about everyone’s projects and experiences is part of the fun! Past participants have commented on the “relaxed atmosphere and the friendly, approachable instructors”, and noted that “everything was delivered in the perfect ‘doses'”. It has been described as an “excellent course, excellent lecturers, excellently structured”.
